MINI Cooper Clubman S ALL4 vs Audi A3

Small cars can be tough to get a bead on - sure a compact can be fun and quirky, but when does that quirkiness begin to hamper the functionality of the car itself. The new MINI Cooper Clubman S ALL4 fits that niche well, a larger version of the typical MINI Cooper, the Clubman S is a more carlike wagon with a lower ride, and a sleek profile. It ups the cargo space and comes equipped with split rear barn doors as well as dual, side-hinged doors that provide easier access to the cargo hold. Not to mention the turbo charged engine puts some pep under the accelerator, meaning you won't sacrifice performance trying to haul cargo or passengers.

But the Clubman S ALL4 isn't the only new, small kid on the block. The AUDI A3 is Audi's entry-level model range, a smaller version of its big brother the A4, and is slotted both in terms of size and price in below it. The A3 comes in either a sedan, convertible, E-Tron hybrid hatchback, and S3 performance sedan. It's a solid vehicle with tons to offer, but can it offer enough to beat out the iconic Clubman S ALL4?

Performance Matters

The MINI Cooper S Clubman ALL4 gets some turbocharged loving for the newest update. It's powered by BMW's 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, fitted with all-wheel drive and is available with a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic transmission. It also gets 189 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque. That power is then routed to all four wheels using Mini's ALL4 all-wheel-drive system, which was first offered in the Countryman.

It's an impressively large and powerful engine to be installed in such a tidy package, and the Clubman S ALL4 certainly takes advantage of it, offering up a peppy yet smooth ride with superior handling thanks the the ALL4 AWD system.

The Audi A3 is offered primarily as a compact four-door sedan, slightly larger than the Clubman, as well as a cabriolet and the E-Tron, a plug-in hybrid that pairs a 1.4-liter turbo four to an electric motor to generate a combined output of 204 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque.

The sedan and convertible are available either with a similar engine to the MINI Clubman - a 1.8-liter turbocharged inline-four, that gets 170 hp and 200 lb-ft to the front wheels which is smaller than the Clubman, or the larger 2.0-liter unit on 220 hp and 258 lb-ft paired with Quattro all-wheel drive, which is almost on pair with MINI's peppy turbo-4. The Quattro tech certainly helps push the performance, but the ALL4 installed in the Clubman, combined with the smaller stature of the MINI edges out the Audi A3 by a slim margin.

In the aesthetic department, the Cooper S Clubman's ride is fun and forward-thinking, not to mention able to keep passengers comfortable for a longer journey. The Clubman comfortably seats four with an un-Mini-like cargo hold capable of holding 18 cubic feet of stuff, with the overall ability to handle up to 48 cubic feet of storage.

Beyond the added measurements, the new Cooper Clubman also has some added class on the interior. The Cooper S Clubman features diamond stitching, and base cars have gorgeous cloth and leatherette seats that add a luxury, bespoke touch to the MINI. And this year, MINI added sound deadening materials to provide a quieter ride.

On the flip side, the Audi A3 only gest some cosmetic changes such as a reshaped single-frame grille that matches the form of the slightly larger A4, as well as angular headlights and thinner LED taillights also mimic those of its big brother. And while the interior is typical Audi, MINI does a much better job of providing an inviting and fun inside ride than does the A3.

If you've been debating whether or not to look into a MINI Clubman S ALL4 vs an Audi A3, the choice to us is clear: the Clubman S ALL4 takes the iconic MINI look and feel and runs with it, creating an exciting and affordable compact ride. Take one for a test drive today at MINI of Rochester.
